Sewing
Machines for Ladies in Kitgum
*This
Project is now complete.
Money
for 15 sewing machines has been raised and transfered
to our partners in Kitgum.* - THANK
YOU for your generosity.
In
August 2007 a team of ladies from America visited
Kitgum in Northern Uganda and led a three day womens
conference. One of the afternoons during the
conference the team offered workshops for the 300+
African ladies and taught them hand sewing, needlepoint
and crocheting. The largest group of ladies
chose to learn hand sewing and at the end of the
allocated time thay had not completed their project.
It was decided to hold a follow up weekend workshop
with a local tailor helping so as the ladies could
finish the work that they had started. Over
40 ladies returned to the weekend workshop and from
this the tailoring school was conceived.
The
women began to meet daily under a Mango Tree and
after seeing their determination Rex and Melinda
Guynn of Missionary Ventures decided they should
do something more.
They
partnered with a local church and from their own
support they paid a local qualified teacher and
the rent on a building.
After
16months they have 21 students who are ready to
graduate in January 2009 and another class that
has already begun.
The
future vision is to purchase land and build a multi-purpose
facility that will be used as a Bible College
for Pastors in Northern Uganda and Southern Sudan
and will also house the tailoring school.
Jireh
Women have decided to partner with Missionary Ventures
and raise the money to purchase 15 treddle sewing
machines. Each sewing machine costs £70.
