The Good Rock Foundation was established in 1997 when the founder Jacqui Shurr & her husband adopted their daughter Abigail from China's Xinjiang province. Abigails Chinese name 'Yan' means Rock & her birthday was Good Friday, hence the inspiration for the Foundations's name!.
Good Rock are a humanitarian aid foundation which believes that every child is precious & deserves to have a life of hope & opportunity. China's special situation & a cultural preference for boys leads to abandonment of girl children & those with disabilities.
Good Rocks good reputation & positive relationships in China place them in an excellent position to champion these children & bring a positive change beginning with this generation. |
They are working with China's social services to improve child welfare policy.
From their small beginning they began to visit more often. They established trusting relations with the authorities, working with them on joint ventures to develop long-term sustainable projects that would offer more help to the children, as well as encourage the child carers in their challenging task and offer life beyond existence in an institution. They believe that with their philosophy of care and a mutually respectful relationship with China's social services they can begin to address the issues that are at the root of the plight of China's abandoned children. |
They advocate foster family care, small community-based homes and assist local childless families in adoption.
The Early Support Units within theircommunity centre's offer critical care to newly found babies and children and in time offer the wider local community health care and family support. The aid in China is backed up with local representation to make the help relevant to the people they are working for.

A Chinese proverb states 'Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and you feed him for life'. We respect the culture we work in and the people working alongside of us.
